Mauritius Airport

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (IATA code: MRU) is the main gateway to Mauritius. This modern airport is named after the first Prime Minister of Mauritius and is a major hub for the Indian Ocean, handling over 3.5 million passengers annually.

Located in the south-east of the island, in the Plaine Magnien district, the airport is about 48 km from Port Louis, the capital, which can be reached in 50 minutes by car.

Its strategic location allows easy access to the island’s main tourist resorts: Grand Baie, the renowned northern seaside resort, can be reached in about 1 hour 15 minutes (65 km), while Flic en Flac, on the west coast, is about 1 hour (55 km) away. The nearest beach resorts of Belle Mare and Blue Bay can be reached in 30 minutes (25 km) and 10 minutes (5 km) respectively.

The terminal, awarded for its eco-friendly design inspired by the traveller ‘ s tree, a typical local plant, is equipped with all modern conveniences and perfectly reflects Mauritian hospitality.

Getting around

Car hire

Car hire is the most popular option for exploring the island comfortably and independently. The major international (Avis, Europcar, Hertz) and local car rental companies have offices in the arrivals terminal. Advance booking is strongly recommended, especially during the high season (October-April). Keep in mind that in Mauritius one drives on the left.

Taxi

The taxi service is available 24 hours a day at the dedicated area outside the arrivals terminal. Taxis are easily recognised by the yellow and black colour scheme and the ‘taxi’ sign on the roof. Fares are regulated and vary according to destination. A ride to Port Louis costs about 1800-2000 Mauritian rupees (about 40-45 euro). It is advisable to agree on the fare before departure and make sure the meter is running.

Buses

Public transport connects the airport with the main locations on the island via the public bus network. The bus stop is located in front of the arrivals terminal. The service is very cheap (30-50 rupees per ride) but journey times are longer and the service is limited to daytime hours. The buses are air-conditioned and relatively comfortable, but can be crowded during peak hours.

Private shuttle

Most luxury hotels and resorts offer a private shuttle service for their guests. This service, which must be booked in advance, may include access to the airport’s VIP lounge. In addition, several private companies offer transfer services with minivans and luxury cars, ideal for families or small groups.

Shuttle bus

A shuttle bus service is available that connects the airport with the island’s main tourist areas. The service operates on a regular basis during the day and offers cheaper fares than private taxis. Advance booking is required through the airport website or travel agencies.
