Mauritius is an African island state located in the Indian Ocean, 550 km east of Madagascar.

Besides the main island of the same name, it also includes the islands Agalega, Cargados Carajos and Rodrigues. Geographically it is part of the Mascarene archipelago, which also includes the French overseas territory of Réunion, but unlike the latter it is an independent republic (it was a former British colony).

Mauritius is considered one of the most popular destinations for travellers from all over the world, with its paradisiacal beaches and turquoise waters.

This little gem in the middle of the Indian Ocean hides many treasures worth discovering during your holiday: its population, history, cuisine, culture and nature are just some of the facets that make the island unique.

Part of the Mascarene Islands, Mauritius has, throughout its history, been the object of European desires: Dutch from 1638 to 1710, French from 1715 to 1810 and finally English until 1968, the year of its independence. Consequently, French and English are the two official languages, used by the majority of the Mauritian population.

This volcanic island of 2,040 km² and its 177 kilometres of coastline, surrounded by coral reefs, boasts heavenly beaches, wonderful excursions and a tropical climate dominated by the trade winds, aspects that will not fail to seduce those who come to visit Mauritius.

Best places to visit in Mauritius

Mauritius is a kaleidoscope of experiences that goes far beyond its famous beaches and offers many places of interest not to be missed.

We begin our journey from Port Louis, the bustling capital where the colonial past blends with modernity. The central market is a theatre of scents, colours and local flavours, while the historic quarter still retains the architecture of the French era.

A few kilometres from the capital, the Jardin botanique Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam in Pamplemousses is a green paradise that is home to rare species such as the Victoria Amazonica giant water lilies and an extraordinary collection of palm trees from all corners of the world.

The island’s hinterland reveals breathtaking landscapes. The Nature Park La Vallée Des Couleurs offers spectacular views and the possibility of ziplining over verdant valleys. Not far away, La Terre des 7 Couleurs in Chamarel presents a unique geological phenomenon: sand dunes that are naturally tinged with seven different colours.

The Black River Gorge, the island’s largest national park, is a biodiversity sanctuary where rare endemic species can be spotted. The Plaine Champagne Road that runs through it offers some of the island’s most impressive views, especially at dawn when the mist envelops the mountain peaks.

In the Tamarin Valley, ancient salt pans tell the story of the salt industry, while the Rhumerie de Chamarel allows visitors to discover the secrets of local rum production. For tea lovers, the Bois Cheri Tea Factory offers tastings with a view of the undulating plantations.

The majestic Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO heritage site, stands as a silent guardian of the south-west coast. This mountain is not only a natural spectacle, but also a symbol of freedom, having once been a refuge for fugitive slaves.

On the east coast, the Blue Bay Marine Park is home to some of the island’s most beautiful coral, while the historic town of Mahébourg retains an authentic atmosphere with its Monday market and naval museum recounting the naval battles between the French and the British.

Completing the picture of this paradise in the Indian Ocean is the island of Rodrigues, which can be reached by a short flight. This remote corner of Mauritius offers a more intimate and authentic experience, with quiet bays, hiking trails and a welcoming population that keeps local traditions alive.

Best beaches in Mauritius

Mauritius’ beaches are true natural masterpieces, where the Indian Ocean paints endless shades of blue. The east coast is home to the magnificent Belle Mare, an expanse of white sand over 10 kilometres long, where crystal-clear waters and coral reefs create a perfect environment for snorkelling.
A little further south, Palmar Beach offers a more intimate and tranquil atmosphere, ideal for those seeking total relaxation.

In the north, Mont Choisy enchants with its crescent shape and casuarinas offering natural shade. The nearby Trou aux Biches seduces with its calm waters and seabed rich in marine life, considered by many to be the most beautiful beach on the island. Grand Baie, besides being a beautiful natural inlet, is also the centre of the island’s nightlife, with its beach restaurants and trendy clubs.

On the western side, Flic en Flac stands out for its coral reef just a few metres from the shore and its spectacular sunsets. Its seafront promenade is animated by street food stalls offering local specialities. Further south, Le Morne offers breathtaking scenery dominated by the mountain massif of the same name and is a kitesurfers’ paradise thanks to its constant breezes.

The south coast offers gems such as Blue Bay, a protected marine area where the turquoise waters are home to more than 50 species of coral and tropical fish. It is the ideal place for glass-bottom boat excursions and snorkelling. Not far away, Gris Gris is unique on the island: there is no coral reef here and the ocean crashes forcefully against the reefs, creating a wild and hypnotic spectacle.

The small but enchanting Pointe aux Piments, on the north-west coast, is a hidden gem where local fishermen still moor their traditional boats, offering an authentic glimpse of island life. Each beach in Mauritius has its own distinct personality, but they all share that magical combination of impalpable sand and crystal-clear waters that makes them unforgettable.

When to go to Mauritius

When planning your trip, be aware that the island is governed by two distinct seasons: austral summer and austral winter.

For travellers who are not bothered by humidity and heat, the austral summer, from November to April, will be the best time to go to Mauritius. Temperatures range between 27 and 30 degrees, which are conducive to relaxation and swimming in the lagoon.

If, on the other hand, you plan to travel to Mauritius to surf and kitesurf, and enjoy cooler temperatures, the austral winter, from May to October, is the time for you. For many tourists, this is the ideal season, with drier weather and temperatures between 17 and 25 degrees.

Places to stay in Mauritius

Choosing where to stay on Mauritius according to your needs and tastes is essential to get off on the right foot when organising your trip.

The north coast of the island, with Grand Baie as a reference point, is perfect for those looking for a combination of relaxation and nightlife. Here you will find numerous boutique hotels and luxury resorts, with easy access to restaurants, shops and clubs.

The east coast is the most exclusive and breezy area of the island. The area of Belle Mare and Trou d’Eau Douce is home to some of the most prestigious resorts in Mauritius, with spectacular beaches and top-class facilities. It is the ideal choice for those seeking privacy and luxury, particularly popular with honeymooners.

The south of the island, around Le Morne, is perfect for lovers of nature and water sports. The resorts here are built in harmony with their surroundings and offer privileged access to outdoor activities. The area is wilder and less developed, ideal for those seeking tranquillity.

The west coast, with Flic en Flac, offers a good compromise between services and authenticity. Hotels in this area enjoy spectacular sunsets and are well connected to the island’s main attractions. Prices are generally more affordable than on the east coast.

For those who prefer a more authentic experience, the small guest houses and boutique hotels in the Mahébourg area, on the south-east coast, allow you to experience the local atmosphere while still maintaining a good level of comfort. This is an excellent choice for independent travellers and those who want to explore the island like a local.

Car hire in Mauritius

The best way to get around Mauritius is undoubtedly to rent a car. The freedom of movement it offers is unparalleled and will allow you to comfortably arrive at places of interest otherwise difficult to reach by public transport.

Bear in mind, however, that in Mauritius you drive on the left, a legacy of the British colonial period. For those coming from countries where people drive on the right, the first few hours may be disorienting, but nothing that will not be resolved after the first 10 minutes. Roundabouts require special attention: remember to give way to vehicles coming from the right and turn clockwise.

The main car rental agencies are located at the airport and in the busiest tourist areas. Booking in advance is essential, especially during the high season (October to March).

All international flights land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), located in the south-east of the island, about 48 km from the capital Port Louis.

Many options are available with or without a stopover in Paris, but also in Dubai, Istanbul or Amsterdam. The main airlines operating daily flights to the island are Air Mauritius, Emirates, Air France, Turkish Airlines and KLM. The total journey time varies from 12 to 16 hours, depending on the stopover chosen.

It is advisable to book flights well in advance, especially during the high season (October-April), when prices tend to rise significantly. The best fares are generally found for travel between May and September.

Documents for Mauritius

To visit Mauritius, it is essential to have a passport, which must have a residual validity of at least 6 months from the date of entry into the country. No visa is required for tourist stays of up to 90 days: a tourist residence permit is issued free of charge on arrival.

Upon entry into the country, you will also need to present your return (or onward) flight ticket and documentation proving your accommodation, such as hotel vouchers. Sufficient funds for your stay are also required.

During the flight or on arrival, you will be asked to fill out an immigration form and a health form (the latter may vary depending on the health regulations in force).

Although not compulsory, travel health insurance is strongly recommended.
