Martinique’s Aimé Césaire International Airport (IATA code: FDF) is the main port of call for this pearl of the French Caribbean. Located in the municipality of Le Lamentin, this modern airport serves as a crucial hub for connections between Martinique and the rest of the world, particularly metropolitan France and other Caribbean islands.
Strategically located in the central part of the island, the airport is only 12 km from Fort-de-France, Martinique’s bustling capital, with a travel time of about 20 minutes under normal traffic conditions. The island’s main tourist resorts can also be reached from here: Les Trois-Îlets can be reached in 30 minutes (15 km) and Le Diamant takes around 45 minutes (25 km). Northern resorts such as Le Carbet and Saint-Pierre can be reached in 45 minutes (30 km) and one hour (35 km) respectively.
The airport, renamed in 2007 in honour of the famous Martinique poet and politician Aimé Césaire, receives more than 2 million passengers annually, confirming it as one of the main hubs in the French Caribbean.
Car hire is practically indispensable for visiting Martinique in comfort. The main car rental companies (Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Budget) have offices directly in the arrivals terminal. It is advisable to book in advance, especially during the high season.
