Guadeloupe is an archipelago in the Lesser Antilles, lost in the Caribbean Sea, consisting of several small islands: the main ones are Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, which together resemble the wings of a butterfly.
Finding the best place to stay in Guadeloupe is not necessarily easy. The best location varies depending on your type of holiday, your budget and the length of your stay.
Depending on whether you prefer to spend most of your time relaxing on the beach, doing water activities, cultural visits or hiking in nature and the forest, the right base will not be the same.
In any case, unless you intend to stay in one place for the duration of your stay, we strongly recommend that you have a hire car at your disposal. This will make your life easier and allow you to discover every corner of the island.
Moreover, if you wish to discover every aspect of Guadeloupe, and especially if your stay lasts more than a week, the best thing to do will probably be to stay in two different locations, in order to have the best chance of getting around the 2 main areas of the island.
Grande-Terre is the eastern part of the main island of Guadeloupe. It is the most developed and touristic region, mainly because this is where the island’s most beautiful beaches are located, as well as Pointe-à-Pitre and the larger towns, plus many of the most famous natural sites.
Choosing to stay in this part of Guadeloupe will give you access to a wide variety of activities. In Pointe-à-Pitre, Sainte-Anne and Saint-François, you will have the opportunity to party in rum bars and discover museums and monuments. Or relax on magnificent beaches such as Caravelle beach or Raisins Clairs beach, go diving, kayaking or hiking.
To find accommodation in this part of the island, we advise you to direct your search towards Sainte-Anne and Saint-François, two towns that are very lively both day and night.
This is the ideal choice for those who want to be in the beating heart of the island, with easy access to restaurants, shops and nightlife. The city boasts a strategic location, being close to the international airport and the main port. The old town area, with its colonial architecture, offers boutique hotel accommodation with period charm.
Sainte-Anne is famous for its magnificent white sandy beaches, including the renowned Plage de la Caravelle. It is the perfect destination for families, with calm, crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The village retains an authentic Creole atmosphere, with a picturesque craft market and numerous restaurants serving local cuisine. Accommodation ranges from all-inclusive resorts to pretty villas with sea views, all within walking distance of the beach.
Saint-François is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. The marina offers boat trips to nearby islands. The area boasts some of the island’s best resorts and luxury villas, perfect for those seeking a holiday of comfort and elegance, thanks also to the presence of a world-class 18-hole golf course, making it an exclusive destination.
Basse-Terre is the entire western part of the main island of Guadeloupe. This region is particularly renowned for its lush nature and its many hiking trails.
The most popular trail will allow you to discover the La Soufrière volcano, the highest peak in the Lesser Antilles. It is located in the heart of Guadeloupe National Park, where you can enjoy many other activities such as canyoning or mountain biking.
This part of the island is much less touristy and less hectic than Grande-Terre. It is particularly suitable for those seeking peace and quiet, away from the crowds and in contact with nature. Here you can discover a very rich fauna and flora, as well as a beautiful diversity of landscapes with forests, plantations, beaches, waterfalls and mountains.
The main towns in this part of Guadeloupe are Bouillante, Deshaies and Trois-Rivières. Deshaies and Bouillante are probably the best places to look for accommodation, as they are sufficiently well located that you can also quickly reach Grande-Terre.
Located on the west coast of Basse-Terre, Bouillante is an ideal destination for nature and diving enthusiasts. The area is famous for its geothermal waters and the rich marine life of the Parc National de la Guadeloupe. Accommodation here is more intimate and authentic, with small eco-hotels and holiday homes surrounded by tropical vegetation. The location is perfect for exploring the surrounding rainforest hiking trails and waterfalls.
This picturesque fishing village on the northwest coast offers a peaceful and romantic atmosphere. Deshaies retains an authentic charm with its colourful harbour and secluded beaches. Accommodation is mainly boutique hotels and bungalows with sea views, ideal for couples seeking privacy. The proximity to the Jardin Botanique de Deshaies adds an extra plus to this resort.
The area offers cheaper accommodation than the more touristy coastal resorts, with authentic bed & breakfasts run by local families. The location is strategic for visiting the La Soufrière volcano and the Carbet waterfalls.
